SÓNAR LISBOA. Festival finalises line-up for 2024 with international icons and local trailblazer.

26 emerging and established artists, both local and international, are announced today, completing the lineup for the third edition of Sónar Lisboa, which takes place in Lisbon. The lineups for each Day and Night are also revealed today.

This second and final announcement includes Jennifer Loveless, Marie Davidson live, Perel, DJ Minx b2b DJ Holographic, Dresden (Ivan Smagghe & Manfredas), and VHOOR; plus a host of names from the vibrant Portuguese scene including Branko, Vanyfox, Yen Sung b2b Photonz, DJ Lynce live, Rui Vargas, Ana Pacheco, ZenGxrl, Conferência Inferno, iolanda, Batida, and many more.

They join a list of performances that already includes world-class DJ sets by 2manydjs invite Éclair Fifi & Erol Alkan, Bonobo, Eliza Rose, and CC:DISCO!; plus stunning live sets from Sevdaliza, Oneohtrix Point Never, Shygirl presents ‘Club Shy’, Moullinex △ GPU Panic, Tiga & Hudson Mohawke present ‘Love Minus Zero’, TOMMY CASH, XEXA, and many more.

This second and final lineup announcement is headlined by an artist whose name is synonymous with electronic music across the world: Paul Kalkbrenner. The German musician has risen from the Berlin techno underground of the late 90s and early 2000s to become one of dance music’s biggest stars. He’ll perform one of his expansive, cinematic live sets at Sónar by Day on Saturday 23rd of March.

Sónar by Night is bolstered by UK jungle revivalist Nia Archives, who’ll perform live; and a heavyweight back-to-back from German underground heroine Helena Hauff and rising UK star Imogen. Also announced today for the nocturnal programme are rising Australian DJ Jennifer Loveless, intergenerational Detroit duo DJ Minx b2b DJ Holographic, and a live set from iconoclastic Canadian producer and vocalist Marie Davidson. They join a lineup that already includes 2manydjs invite Éclair Fifi & Erol Alkan, multi-talented performer Sevdaliza, and Tiga & Hudson Mohawke (presenting ‘Love Minus Zero’).

Buraka Som Sistema co-founder and producer Branko has been at the epicentre of Lisboa’s electronic music scene for the last two decades. He’ll appear at Sónar by Day with a new live set based on his forthcoming album. He also co-runs label and platform Enchufada, who have curated a special showcase of emerging artists from the lusophone world, including Brazilian baile funk innovator VHOOR, Angola’s DJ Satelite, and the next star of kuduro and batida, Vanyfox. Also announced are local legends – Rui Vargas and Yen Sung b2b Photonz – and emerging Portuguese artists – DJ Lynce live, Ana Pacheco, and new wave/post-punk trio Conferência Inferno. They’re just a few of the diverse set of Portuguese artists added today, joining already announced names like Chima Isaaro, Moullinex △ GPU Panic, and XEXA.

Also added to the Sónar by Day programme is a hybrid DJ set from Perel and a pair of unorthodox selectors, Ivan Smagghe & Manfredas, who’ll appear together as Dresden (Ivan Smagghe & Manfredas). They join already announced DJ sets from Bonobo, Eliza Rose, and CC:DISCO!; plus live performances by Oneohtrix Point Never, TOMMY CASH, Shygirl (presenting ‘Club Shy’), and Wata Igarashi.

With the lineup now complete, the individual lineups for Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night are also now available. Sónar by Day will once again feature indoor and outdoor stages at Pavilhão Carlos Lopes on Saturday and Sunday; Sónar by Night will be concentrated entirely within Pavilhão Carlos Lopes on Friday and Saturday.

A Sónar+D programme, spread across all three days of Sónar Lisboa 2024, will be held inside the greenhouse Estufa Fria, just a short walk from Pavilhão Carlos Lopes. It will include conferences and concerts, as well as an audiovisual installation. More details will be announced very soon.

The first artists and activities have just been announced for Sónar 2024 in Barcelona. On the 13th, 14th and 15th of June, the 31st edition of the festival will see Sónar double down on its reputation for bringing together emerging talent, radical performances and the best dance music from around the world.
Amongst the 70 names already announced are Kaytranada, Jessie Ware, Vince Staples, Floating Points, and Charlotte de Witte presents ‘Overdrive’, plus a swathe of forward-thinking and experimental artists, both local and international. Renowned artists Tomás Saraceno and Nicole L’Huillier are amongst the first participants announced for Sónar+D 2024, which will explore the interplay between technology and nature, and practical applications of Artificial intelligence in the arts. Introducing Sónar Lisboa 2024.
Sónar Lisboa returns to the heart of the Portuguese capital for its 3rd edition. On the 22nd, 23rd and 24th March 2024, Parque Eduardo VII will once again host two days and two nights of music, creativity and technology.

Once again, Sónar Lisboa 2024 will feature both Sónar by Day (23rd and 24th March) and Sónar by Night (22nd and 23rd March) programmes, with a revised layout designed to improve the user experience.

Pavilhão Carlos Lopes will once again host a mix of indoor and outdoor stages for Sónar by Day on Saturday and Sunday. This year, Sónar by Night is entirely concentrated in the Pavilhão Carlos Lopes’ indoor stage, with non-stop music on both Friday and Saturday night. Estufa Fria will also host a Sónar+D programme, with activities across all three days of the festival, including conferences and concerts, as well as an audiovisual installation. Belgian duo 2manydjs will headline Sónar by Night with a pair of very special guests. Following on from an epic session at Sónar 2023, the Dewaele brothers will perform another unprecedented, never-seen-before set, this time sharing the booth with a pair of colourful, eclectic UK DJs, Glasgow’s Éclair Fifi and London stalwart Erol Alkan.

An artist who’s synonymous with electronic music across the world, Paul Kalkbrenner, will headline Sónar by Day. A true Berlin legend, who came of age during the German capital’s golden era of techno, he emerged from the city’s underground to become one of electronic music’s biggest stars. Exclusively performing live, his sets are expansive affairs: the sound of techno at its most cinematic.

UK artist Bonobo will also grace the stage at Sónar by Day, exploring his wide range of influences – from afrobeat and drum’n’bass to hip-hop and house – during an expansive DJ set. Also appearing are 2023 breakout artist Eliza Rose, who’ll show off her deep knowledge of UK garage and house; Lisbon-based Australian selector CC:DISCO!, who’ll play a homecoming set of disco, house, funk, and boogie; and retro-futurist producer Perel, whose hybrid DJ sets feature live vocals.

At Sónar by Night, underground heroine Helena Hauff will go back-to-back with rising star Imogen, for a heavyweight set that focuses on the darker side of electronic music: spiky electro, lean techno, choppy breaks, and industrial textures. Iconoclastic producer and vocalist Marie Davidson is one of electronic music’s most compelling performers: she’ll perform tracks from her forthcoming album live. For those in the mood for something brighter, Jennifer Loveless’ high-energy take on house and techno is sure to hit the spot.

Sónar Lisboa 2024 will also welcome a trio of female artists who blend club music with pop tendencies. Dutch-Iranian artist Sevdaliza will perform a genre-defying live set at Sónar by Night, blending experimental sonics with trip-hop and r&b. She’s joined by a UK producer who’s leading the jungle revival; Nia Archives’ high energy live act combines deep basslines, rapid breakbeats and irresistible melodies. Another UK crossover star, Shygirl, brings her new concept show ‘Club Shy’ to Sónar by Day, translating her provocative and tender tracks to the dancefloor.

Also at Sónar by Day are a pair of unmissable cult acts: always-unpredictable Estonian hip-hop artist and countercultural icon TOMMY CASH; and experimental US producer Oneohtrix Point Never, who’ll bring his latest album Again to the stage at Sónar Lisboa, exploring the all-consuming relationship music has with its own past.

From Lisbon to the world.
Since co-founding electronic kuduro outfit Buraka Som Sistema in the early 2000s, producer and DJ Branko has been at the epicentre of Lisbon’s electronic music scene. He’ll appear at Sónar by Day with a new live set based on his yet-to-be-named 2024 album. He’s also curated a special showcase of emerging lusophone artists via his Enchufada label, featuring percussive DJ sets from Brazilian baile funk specialist VHOOR and rising Portuguese batida and kuduro producer Vanyfox. Also invited are singer-songwriter iolanda, who’ll perform her fado-influenced r&b live; Angolan afro house mainstay DJ Satelite; and eclectic Angolan-Portuguese selector ZenGxrl.

Portugal’s vibrant local scene will be heavily represented across Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night. One of Lisboa’s best-kept secrets, digger and selector Chima Isaaro, is joined by a pair of local legends, Yen Sung and Photonz. The pair of veteran DJs will go back-to-back, exploring their shared passion for house music from Portugal and beyond. XEXA’s fourth world soundscapes draw on both afrofuturism and her own São Toméan heritage; Moullinex △ GPU Panic’s live shows mix airy electronica and dreamy synthpop; post-punk trio Conferência Inferno perform tracks from their latest new wave inspired record; Ritamaomenos plays gritty, cinematic electro; Celeste Mariposa and Batida both champion rhythms and grooves from lusophone Africa; RUUAR mix sleek, minimal house and techno; and Magupi’n’liquid bass recreate drum’n’bass live using an electro-acoustic marimba and drum kit.

This year’s Sónar by Day lineup also features a heavy dose of deep, transportative music aimed at the dancefloor, with deep techno aficionada Laura BCR and a live set from Japanese psychedelic techno maestro Wata Igarashi, plus local DJ AMULADOR. They’re joined by veteran selectors Ivan Smagghe and Manfredas, who’ll appear as Dresden. Together they explore dance music’s most unorthodox and lysergic zones; local selector Ana Pacheco and multidisciplinary duo Supa b2b Ghetthoven are similarly inclined, favouring slower tempos and psychedelic grooves. And the godfather of Portuguese electronic music, Rui Vargas, returns to the festival to play a typically hypnotic session.

Hudson Mohawke and Tiga’s collaborative live AV project Love Minus Zero reconfigures the concept of the rave for a 21st century audience: catch them at Sónar by Night. That’s also where you’ll find the ‘genre-fluid’ selections of Live From Earth member DJ Gigola, who plays everything from Madonna to Surgeon; and an intergenerational, 100% female, 100% Detroit back-to-back from DJ Minx and DJ Holographic.

Heading back to Sónar by Day, Florentino’s DJ sets mix latin rhythms and dancehall with contemporary UK bass music; while outspoken UK artist Grove collides drum’n’bass, punk, and dancehall in their electric live sets. Porto’s DJ Lynce is a devotee of jungle and UK hardcore: expect rapid, high-tempo breakbeats during his live appearance. Barcelona artist and DJ Ikram Bouloum goes back-to-back with Portuguese multi-disciplinary artist Odete: expect a set of geographically-diverse, experimental club music. Finally, rising producer Mona Yim will play a DJ set of fresh, contemporary tech house, tinged with hyperpop and 2-step.

With a third edition in Lisbon, Sónar continues to reinforce its relationship with the city, which is now firmly established as part of the festival’s annual calendar.

After the Portuguese capital, Sónar will also return to Istanbul and the Zorlu PSM Performing Arts Centre on the 26th, 27th and 28th April, for an eighth consecutive year. To date, Sónar has organised over 100 festivals in 35 cities across the world.

On the 13th 14th, and 15th of June, the Sónar world tour will conclude in its hometown of Barcelona. The 31st edition of the festival will double down on Sónar’s reputation for identifying and amplifying the best music from around the world; bringing together emerging talent and radical performance aesthetics with a lineup focused on dance and discovery.

The first lineup announcement includes 70 performances and activities, featuring leading names from dance music and beyond such as Kaytranada, Jessie Ware, Ben Böhmer, Floating Points, Charlotte de Witte presents ‘Overdrive’, Vince Staples, and Folamour, plus a swathe of forward-thinking, experimental artists. Sónar+D, the festival’s meeting of digital culture, will explore the interplay between technology and nature, and delve into the practical applications of artificial intelligence in sound, stage design, gaming, alternative realities, music, cinema, and the arts.
