Dilemma is back on Soulvent with a 4-track stunner of a release in the form of Exit Stage Left, her debut EP on the label following her Stolen Cuts EP on Random Movement’s imprint Flight Pattern. The blue haired enigma follows up her 2019 single ‘Gone To Soon’ featuring Robert Manos, with an adept offering, continuing to roll out her pensive yet lustrous brand of fast soul music.
Title track ‘Exit Stage Left’ purrs to life with twinkling keys and silky percussion, flanked by breathy pops and a tumbling bassline. The sultry jazz-infused track ticks over effortlessly with a restrained elegance, building on its foundations with a deepening drum break and seemingly everlasting pads.
‘Rest Assured’ further expands on this eclectic fusion, a more discordant affair than its predecessor. The climax of churning bass pairs with soothing vocals creating a ‘lullaby’ type of effect, to quote the lyrics.
Kicking off with sparse drums is ‘To Your Heart’. The fuzzy but familiar vocal sample then bursts with little delay into an instant classic of an old school roller.
Final track ‘Spiral’ uncoils into a crisp groove befitting the title – long piano chords and a soothing harmonic arrangement unfold with warm low end, rounding off the EP in an accomplished fashion.
Back like she never left, we invite you to sample the experimental and emotive jazz works of Dilemma and the Exit Stage Left EP – out in all good stores on the 17th of July.
