The zen master returns.
The key figure in the history of Japanese hip hop and urban dance music, Dj Krush brings his formidable turntable talents to SonarVillage in a long awaited return to the European stage. Born Hideaki Ishi in Tokyo in 1962, exposure to the Wild Style craze of the early 80’s set him on the path towards becoming one of the most respected performers and producers in the world, an architect of the boom bap sound, and collaborator with Mos Def, Blackthought, Guru, DJ Shadow and more.

The timeless nature of Krush’s output (listening to 1998’s Kakusei still feels urgent and unique 20 years on) is down to his dedication to the base elements of hip hop – a crate digger’s approach to finding the perfect kick or snare to loop, and an appreciation of the mistakes in the artform. As a result Krush’s work is at once polished and raw, a testament to the power of the drum, and what 2 turntables can achieve.

Carving a Niche.
One third of the production trio TQD and a standard bearer for the next gen of UK Bass, Danielle Gooding knows a thing or two about the dance. With a reputation for gnarly bass drops, wicked 2-step and keeping the party going till the lights come up, her DJ sets are raptuously received on both sides of the Atlantic, and across the spectrum of shubz from basement raves through to super-clubs.

Originally hailing from the south coast city of Bournemouth, Flava’s close affiliation with the label Butterz has played a big part in the grime and UK Garage renaissance of the last couple of years, with her productions such as Hold On or On My Mind consistently finding a spot on the playlists and USB’s of clubland’s finest DJs. 2018 was marked by the release of the Spicy Noodles EP on AC Slater’s Night Bass, as well as the LP More Love. Her 2019 Sónar set is sure to be fire, bringing the joys of chopped vocals and bassline house into the ears of a whole new generation.

Music is a matter of Life And Death.
Manfredi Romano has one goal in life – to make people dance. It’s a challenge that is hard to resist at one of his sets, packed full of undiscovered and rare disco, house, techno, funk and electro gems. This year the Italian DJ and producer will be throwing down the gauntlet at SonarPub on Saturday night, a peak time set for an artist who can move a crowd whatever the time of day or night.

What started out a fun side gig for the artist known as Dj Tennis (the name is a wink to his childhood career as a tennis champ), has now become a full time job. In the best possible sense. Alongside his frequent bookings around the world as a DJ, Manfredi is also an in demand producer and remixer, talents he puts to good use through his influential Life And Death label. Since starting the label in Berlin (later moving to Miami), L&D has released and supported artists from across the spectrum of electronic music including Mind Against, Tale of Us, Recondite and Lucy. With a healthy dose of DIY and punk rock energy (inherited from his days as a gig promoter), Tennis has built his label into one of the best players in the game.
