Sónar 2018 Barcelona. Festival’s 25th birthday, a global celebration that invites you to discover the future of music and audiovisual.

After the opening of the exhibition “NI FLYERS, NI PÓSTERS. 25 years of Sónar image” in L’Hospitalet (until 23rd June), Sónar 2018 starts on Tuesday 12th June in the inner courtyard of Barcelona City Council with the audiovisual installation “Chiasm”. From Wednesday the 13th to Saturday 16th June, the 6th edition of Sónar+D, the technology and creative industries congress, will be held at Fira Montjuïc. From Thursday 14th to Saturday 16th June, Sónar by Daywill open its doors on Montjuïc, while Sónar by Night will open on Friday and Saturday in L’Hospitalet. The festival closes on Sunday 17th June with the extraordinary concert “Two” by Alva Noto and Ryuchi Sakamoto at Teatre Grec.

Sónar 2018 presents 150 performances including the return of festival classics, LCD Soundsystem; Gorillaz’s new show in support of their imminent new album; the electronic project of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke in which he will also be premiering material live in what will be his only European festival date this year, and Richie Hawtin’s award-winning show, CLOSE, all at Sonar by Night. At Sónar by Day, Sónar will host the world premiere of Rosalía’s new show in support of her  next release, or the immersive clubbing experience of DESPACIO with James Murphy and 2manydj’s playing vinyl in 6-hour sets; all highlights of the program.

Sónar by Day is further enriched by the African party “Diplo presents”, which brings together artists from Uganda, South Africa and Nigeria, in addition to Diplo’s own dj set; “Laurent plays Garnier”, a unique set by Laurent Garnier playing only his own repertoire; the shows created exclusively for Sónar by artists who share with the festival their vocation for risk, such as Niño de Elchewith the dancer Israel Galván, and the electronic explorations of Refree with the director Isaki Lacuesta. The shows by Cornelius, Olafur Arnalds, Lorenzo Senni and Alva Noto and the rhymes of emerging national figures in hip-hop such as Rels B and Maikel de la Calle are also noteworthy. A special mention also goes to the duo formed by the legendary Amp Fiddler & Tony Allen where Detroit funk and Afrobeat will converge. Also at SonarDôme by Red Bull Music, Kode9 joins the legendary anime master Koji Morimoto, and Yuzo Koshiro meets Motohiro Kawashima, reviewing the history of Japanese video game music, two audiovisual proposals that will combine cutting-edge technology and nostalgia for the golden age of 8 and 16 bit videogames.

Sónar by Night will feature Diplo, one of the most influential stars in music over the last decade, historically closely linked to Sónar. Also at Sónar by night will be a double helping of Bonobo, with a live show and a dj set; the new sensation of electronica, Lanark Artefax, and one of the pillars of British grime, Wiley. In the area of DJs, Laurent Garnier will close Saturday night with a special 4-hour session, other festival classics such as Modeselektor, A-Trak and Angel Molina, and the 6-hour sessions at SonarCar – the circular sound stage – by DJ Harvey and John Talabot, among many others. The festival’s night-time closing sets will have a strong feminine accent with sets from electronic veteran Miss Kittin, in an exclusive back to back with Kim Ann Foxman, and the new European techno heroines Helena Hauff and Charlotte de Witte.

The festival brings together the new trends in electronics and global hip hop, featuring artists who are very different from each other but whose trap beats and rhythms unite them, despite their differing takes on the genre. This is the case of Yung Lean (Sweden), Rozzma (Egypt), Liberato (Italy), Rosa Pistola (Mexico), King Doudou (France), Nathy Peluso (Argentina), Kokokoko! (Congo), Kampire (Uganda), IAMDDDB (UK), Nídia (Portugal) or nationals Alizzz, Steve Lean, Pedro Ladroga and Merca Bae, among many others.

On Thursday the 14 of June, the Inaugural Sonar 2018 Concert with the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC) will be held in Barcelona’s L’Auditori, performing one of the most relevant pieces of minimalism by the Californian composer Terry Riley. The festival’s Closing Concert will be held on Sunday 17 June with the new show by Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, who will put the finishing touches on Sonar’s 25th anniversary at the Teatre Grec.

Sónar+D joins in the celebration of Sonar’s 25th Anniversary to explore the future of creativity, taking the pulse of the next 25 years of music, technology, knowledge and the Web. The congress will bring together around 5,000 professionals from 65 countries in Barcelona. In this edition, organizations such as NASA, MIT Media Lab, Google Magenta, The Long Now Foundation, Mozilla, Bandcamp, creators such as the Virtual Reality studio Felix and Paul, the pioneer in linking Internet and music; Ian Rogers, current head of the digital area of LVMH, the experience designer Nelly Ben Hayoun, the Augmented Reality artist Zach Lieberman and Susan Rogers, Prince’s sound engineer, among others, stand out. Sónar+D also premieres the monumental 19-meter diameter dome Sónar360º by MEDIAPRO, where the most recent audiovisual and immersive projects in the world will be screened.

Sónar 2018 concludes on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 June at Fira Montjuïc with the 3rd edition of Maker Faire, the meeting of makers, researchers and technologists with a programme of one hundred proposals, including stands, conferences and workshops, which this year focuses on cities as self-sustaining and sustainable production centres. All activities are free and aimed at all ages.

The exhibition “NI FLYERS, NI PÓSTERS. 25 años de imagen Sónar”, a multi-installation experiential tour of the images, characters and more than 70 iconic pieces that have made up Sónar’s campaigns, can also be seen during the days of the festival and until 23 June – free of charge – at the Centre d’Art Tecla Sala in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

Sónar joins the “No Callem” (they won’t shut us) protocol for action against sexual assaults. The initiative, promoted by the Barcelona City Council, aims to eliminate the risk of sexism or sexist aggression in nightlife venues. To this end, an information stand is set up, the most sensitive areas are specially watched over and the festival staff are trained to provide assistance and guidance in the event of an assault.

Listen to the Sónar 2018 playlists curated by the festival’s directors, which include songs and video clips by the main programmed artists and 2 playlists that review some of the hits of Sonar’s 25 years: VIDEO / AUDIO.

More than 100 performances of Sonar 2018 will be streamed live from the platforms of Culturebox, iCat, Resident Advisor, Red Bull Radio and the festival’s own website, as well as on its social networks.

Sónar 2018 main shows.
Sónar by Night will welcome the extraordinary return of the New York band LCD Soundsytem, led by James Murphy, presenting an exclusive show in Spain in which they will perform both the new songs of the recent “American Dream” and their formidable collection of great hits.

The British band Gorillaz, created by the musician Damon Albarn and the artist Jamie Hewlett, will present their long-awaited new show for the first time in Spain, after more than 5 years since their last visit. Their performance will be their first time in Barcelona, where they will perform songs from their upcoming new album, “The Now Now” (to be released on June 29th), and will be accompanied by a cast of surprise star guests, whose identity will be revealed at the last moment. A more exciting proposition would be impossible.

Thom Yorke, Radiohead frontman and key musician of our time, joins Sonar’s 25th Anniversary with a special show on Saturday night, June 16, in which he will review his impressive career with producer Nigel Godrich and multidisciplinary artist Tarik Barri, responsible for the show’s striking visual component. Attention all Yorke fans and followers, because in one of the very few concerts prior to Sonar’s he has played a new or newly live premiered song for this tour.

Two legends of the festival will take part in the great celebration at Sónar: Richie Hawtin, with his award-winning show ‘CLOSE’, whose staging presents an advanced and intimate audiovisual configuration full of infrared cameras that are projected on a complex device of screens; and Laurent Garnier closing Saturday night, with a special four-hour outdoor session that will undoubtedly go down in history. To these must be added the presence of Diplo, the most transversal artist in electronic music of our time, who returns to Sonar to present one of his impressive shows comprising bass, house, new digital rhythms and beats from all over the world.

The festival’s evening festivities this year will have a strong feminine accent, with veteran dj and producer Miss Kittin, in an exclusive back-to-back set with Kim Ann Foxman, and the new heroines of European techno Helena Hauff and Charlotte de Witte.

As a special gift for the festival, both Garnier and Diplo will also present very special sets at Sónar by Day: the Frenchman will review his career with a session entitled Laurent plays Garnier, in which he will only play his own repertoire and remixes; and the American will lead ‘Diplo presents’, a showcase that will bring together three of his favourite African artists -Distruction Boyz (South Africa), Mr EAZI (Nigeria) and Kampire (Uganda)- and which he himself will close with a dj set focused on the music of the African continent.

Sonar’s 25th anniversary will be celebrated in style at DESPACIO, an extraordinary club experience within Sónar by Day with James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) and brothers David and Stephen Dewaele (2manydjs) behind the decks. Together they will take hi-fi sound – with a spectacular sound system made up of 7 loudspeaker towers and amplifiers arranged in a circle – to its maximum expression with 3 dj sets of 6 hours -one a day-, playing only vinyl, where the absolute protagonists will be the music and the audience.

The new voices of the national scene.
Sónar 2018 will premiere the new live shows from many of the most important national artists of the moment.

The performance of Rosalía, who has already become an undisputed star due to her talent and her unquestionable charisma, is particularly noteworthy. She will present a new show and the songs of her imminent and long-awaited “El Mal Querer”, her second album, co-produced with El Guincho. Another artist who starts from flamenco to take it to other places, Niño de Elche, will also present an exclusive show for Sónar with the most transgressive dancer imaginable, Israel Galván. Refree will explore in solitude his electronic concerns, never before revealed, with an audiovisual show conceived together with the director Isaki Lacuesta. Henry Saiz, will be accompanied by a live band to present “Human”, an album recorded in different parts of the world. And Oscar Mulero will present his live project “Monochrome”, giving an outlet to his most introspective and experimental side.

Sónar 2018 will also feature performances by Alizzz, one of the most inspired Spanish producers with international reach of the moment; Pina + Gnomalab, presenting their new work with a marked industrial character; and Olde Gods, presenting the album “Gitanes”; Steve Lean, key producer of the new urban sound and the national trap scene; Lory Money, singer of Senegalese origin with more than 12.5 million views on YouTube; or the djs Alicia Carrera, Blastto, Bawrut and Ivana Ray Singh, among many other artists.

Sónar by Night: the biggest dancefloor.
Sónar by Night will feature shows and dj sets by some of the most outstanding artists on the international scene, such as Modeselektor (dj set), A-Trak, Benjamin Damage, Charlotte de Witte and Bonobo, with a double serving: a live performance at SonarClub and a late-night dance session at SonarLab.

Together with Resident Advisor, Sónar presents the SonarLab stage on Saturday night. The respected online platform will feature a top-level programme of the most essential electronic dance acts in the world today, with performances by Lanark Artefax, Octo Octa, Errorsmith, Fatima Al Qadiri, Motor City Drum Ensemble & Jeremy Underground, Ben Klock & Dj Nobu and the Spanish dj JASSS.

Also noteworthy are the highly acclaimed Objekt, Young Marco and Call Super; the tandem of Miss Kittin, diva of international clubbing, and Kim Ann Foxman, a key figure in New York’s house and techno movement; Germany’s Helena Hauff, unanimously considered one of the best DJs in the world right now; and Northern Ireland’s Bicep live.

Sónar by Day: Hedonism and experimentation.
2manydjs, the Belgian siblings who have been responsible for some of the most epic sets in the history of the festival, will star in the closing set of Saturday’s party at Sónar by Day with their kaleidoscopic hit factory. Meanwhile, the top representative of South African house, Black Coffee, will be in charge of closing the day on Friday at Sónar by Day.

In addition, there will be performances by some of today’s most acclaimed experimental artists, such as the indispensable Cornelius and Alva Noto (both showcasing new albums), Laurel Halo, Agoria (presenting his first live show) and three high-voltage duos: Sinjin Hawke & Zora Jones, Ilpo Väisänen & Schneider TM (under the name Die Angel) and the USA’s Second Woman.

Sónar by Day will also feature top-flight artists such as Demdike Stare, with an AV show alongside visual artist Michael England; the emerging Korean-born dj, singer and producer Yaeji; the new star of UK urban IAMDDB; Icelands’ Ólafur Arnalds, moving with unusual talent between classical, electronic and contemporary music; Norwegian vocalist, composer and poet Jenny Hval, as well as the enigmatic Neapolitan artist Liberato, whose face has never been unveiled, who has become a mass phenomenon in Italy and is considered the new icon of Naples’ cultural renaissance.

Red Bull Music celebrates 20 years.
Red Bull Music joins the 25th anniversary party by reviewing the history of Japanese video game music with the ‘Diggin’ in the Carts’ project. Kode9 will present a show inspired by the videogames with visuals by legendary anime director Koji Morimoto; composers Yuzo Koshiro & Motohiro Kawashima will perform a show inspired by classic games like Streets of Rage live, with visuals by Konx-om-Pax; and New Zealand’s DITC Sound, whose set will unearth hidden gems from the genre’s rich history.

Red Bull Music continues to be the tracker of emerging global talent  that is deployed every year at Sónar by Day. The list of artists present this year is expanded with the world premiere of the duo formed by legendary drummer and Fela Kuti collaborator Tony Allen, along with the unrivalled funk of one of the main pillars of the genre in Detroit, Amp Fiddler. The live exclusives continue with DJ Earl & Nick Hook Live AV, DECISIVE PINK, Claude Speeed, Terrritroy Live and Emma-Jean Thackray’s WALRUS. All of them join the already announced premiere of the Swedish trio Studio Barnhus, among many others.

On the same stage will take place the stellar performance of iconic dj and New Jersey garage sound leader Tony Humphries playing a house set inspired by the golden age of New York radio.

In addition, SonarDôme will feature SOPHIE, who will release her debut album the same day as her performance, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement (Dominick Fernow x Philippe Hallais x Silent Servant); the Malaysian band The Venopian Solitude; the promising duos Dj Stingray x Mumdance, Suzanne Kraft x Jonny Nash; Dabrye x Mc Kadence live; the French producers Chloé – Slow Mo live and OkLou; Spain’s Álex Silva Live Band; the tandem formed by Clip & Cora Novoa Live; Museless and Big Menu & Friends.

The urban rhythms of Sónar 2018.
Urban rhythms from hip hop through to ghetto beats from around the world will be represented by Wiley, the  godfather of grime, showcasing one of the best works in his long career, the recent ‘Godfather’ and ‘Godfather Part II’. Along with him, new talents such as those of the British dj Jamz Supernova, the production duo Jarami (Frank Ocean’s collaborators), Portugal’s Nídia (a mainstay of the influential Principe Records label), the Barcelona-based Mueveloreina and the Mallorcan Rels B (both renewing the forms of hip hop and trap), as well as Swedens Dinamarca, with his torrid approach to reggaeton and bass music.

Contemporary urban music takes on a central role this year with the incorporation of globally successful artists such as GoldLink, Yung Lean, Oddisee & Good Compny, Dre Skull, King Doudou, Preditah, Joe Kay from Soulection, and Little Simz, renewing styles and sounds such as slow rap, dancehall, activist hip hop, new funk, the grime or African-style trap.

SonarXS and the sounds of the global underground.
These world-class urban sounds will be well represented on the SonarXS stage, the perfect place to enjoy and discover Sonar’s most underground, extreme and unclassifiable proposals.

This is the case of such diverse and stimulating artists as Chino Amobi (global noise and hardcore), Mexico’s Rosa Pistola (reggaeton and new Latin rhythms) Nathy Peluso (contemporary trap and soul), Russell Haswell (experimentation and noise), Egypt’s Rozzma (Arab beats), Putochinomaricón (new lo-fi trap from Madrid via Taiwan) and the spanish artist MOW (electronic pop and future beats).

Opening and closing Sónar 2018 in style.
On Thursday 14th June, the special concert Sónar a L’ Auditori will be held, in which the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC) conducted by Brad Lubman will perform one of the most relevant pieces of contemporary minimalism, “In C”, by the brilliant Californian composer Terry Riley. This is Sónar’s new collaboration with L’ Auditori’s ‘Sampler Sèries’ series.

This year, the 25th edition of the festival will close in style: Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto will premiere their new piano, electronic and visual show, “Two”, featuring new live music and improvisations on Sunday 17 June at the Teatre Grec. The Sonar 2018 concert will be one of only three concerts in the world that both artists will perform this year.

Sónar Calling, a call to alien intelligence.
Sónar Calling is a celebration, an artistic-scientific experiment and a collective reflection open to humans and extraterrestrials.

“Sónar Calling GJ273b” is the first radio transmission in history to be sent to a potentially habitable nearby exoplanet, Luyten’s Star b. The message includes 38 pieces of music of 10 seconds each -commissioned exclusively by Sónar-, created by artists related to the festival that summarize the exploratory character of Sónar throughout its quarter century of existence.

The first transmissions were sent, on 16, 17 and 18 October 2017, from the EISCAT (European Scientific Association for Incoherent Dispersion) antenna in Tromsø (Norway) and the second on 15, 15 and 16 May.

Artists invited to participate in the initiative include Agoria, Ah! Kosmos, Alva Noto, Autechre, Carsten Nicolai, Choi Sai Ho, Cora Novoa, Daedelus, Daito Manabe, Desert, Holly Herndon, Jean-Michel Jarre, Juana Molina, Kate Tempest, Kode 9, Laurel Halo, Laurent Garnier, LCC, Lorenzo Seni, Matmos, Modeselektor, Nina Kraviz, Niño de Elche, Richie Hawtin, Ryoji Ikeda, Squarepusher, The Black Madonna, Yuzo Koshiro and Zora Jones, as well as three pieces chosen from among the public.

The Sónar Calling project will have a physical presence at Sónar by Day through a space designed to discover the artistic and scientific aspects of the 12.4 light-years journey to the exoplanet Luyten b. An artistic installation in which the iconic lights of Sónar Calling GJ273b and the large-scale projection of evocative landscapes of Tromsø envelop the visitor in the atmosphere of one of the most ambitious projects in the history of the festival. At the entrance to the installation, videos will explain how the two music streams were made from interviews with the artists involved and the scientists who made the submissions possible; the sounds and descriptions of the submitted pieces and the scientific content of the broadcasts.

The music and messages from the artists, along with all the information about the project are now available atsonarcalling.com

Maker Faire Barcelona, Saturday and Sunday at Fira Montjuïc.
On the 16th and 17th of June, hundreds of local and international makers will meet in the Italian Pavilion of Fira Montjuïc to share projects and knowledge through exhibitions, workshops on creative technologies, talks and interactive demonstrations aimed at all ages and audiences.

Engineers, artists, designers, hackers, craftsmen and scientists will present their most advanced projects within the framework of society 4.0, with the cities as the central axis of the event. The programme is made up of nearly 100 proposals, including stands, exhibitions and conferences, grouped into areas that identify the major social and economic challenges facing cities today: food, energy and mobility, advanced manufacturing, education and learning, environment and health and, finally, an area dedicated to Space, celebrating 25 years of Sónar.

Humanoid robots or food made with 3D printers, plastic materials recovery models, technologies for urban vertical agriculture projects, low cost incubators for developing countries or autonomous driving simulators are some of the projects that can be seen in this edition of Maker Faire. Check the full program here. Access is free and open to all ages.

“NI FLYERS NI PÓSTERS. 25 years of Sónar image”, the exhibition.
On the occasion of the 25th Anniversary, the festival organizes the exhibition “NI FLYERS NI PÓSTERS. 25 years of Sónar image”, a multi-installation experiential tour of the festival’s image. The exhibition can be seen free of charge between 24 May and 23 June at the Centre d’Art Tecla Sala in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

Through a selection of more than 70 iconic pieces distributed in 10 rooms, the exhibition proposes an experiential journey through the various themes that have shaped Sonar’s campaigns over these 25 years. The exhibition itself is a giant, multiroom installation by Sergio Caballero, co-director of Sónar and creator of the graphic image, starring the famous ghosts of 2010, the telekinetic twins of 2006, Maradona in 2002 or, in 1997, the parents of the festival organisers themselves, among others.

Admission to the exhibition is free, and during the three days of Sonar a bus will connect the Centre d’Art Tecla Sala with the Sónar de Día exhibition centre.

The exhibition “NI FLYERS, NI PÓSTERS. 25 years of Sónar image” is the result of an initiative by Advanced Music in collaboration with the City Council of L’Hospitalet and the Centre d’Art Tecla Sala.

About Sónar.
Sónar is a three-day electronic and advanced music festival. It was founded in Barcelona in 1994 by Ricard Robles, Enric Palau and Sergi Caballero, and is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013, with four festivals taking place in four different cities: Barcelona (for the 20th time) Tokyo (for the 6th time), Osaka (for the 1st time) and Reykjavik (for the 1st time). Watch to the photos of the Sónar festival here

The festival has been divided into two parts since its inception. Sónar by Day was organized at the CCCB, the MACBA and the surrounding area (Plaça dels Àngels, Capella dels Àngels, etc.), in the very centre of Barcelona, between the first year and the 2012 festival. Starting in 2013, the Festival is moving to the Fira Montjuïc facilities at Plaza d’Espanya, maintaining its central role and its status as an urban festival and expanding its capacities. Meanwhile, Sónar by Night has changed location several times, with the pavilion at Mar Bella (1997-2000) and the exhibition area at Fira Gran Via in L’Hospitalet (from 2001 to date) being its most well-known spaces.

Sónar’s founding values have defined the festival since its inception: the link between creativity and technology, its commitment to being a global event and a meeting point for creative people from both public and industry sectors, from different disciplines and communities.

Sónar Barcelona’s activities are divided into two main locations: the recently premiered Sónar by Day, located from 2013 in Fira Montjuïc, with concerts and dj’s, showcases as well as the new Sónar+D area, the essence of which is discovering and tracking new talent and enhance professional activities; and the larger shows at Sónar by Night, in Fira Gran Via de L’Hospitalet, where the leading names in the current international music scene are staged.

Sónar+D presents a program with a common goal:
to make the relationship between creativity, technology,
