American teacher, musician, internet personality and king of the kettle Winslow has been a name on the lips of the UK scene for some time now, for all the right reasons. Rising to prominence with a run of self-releases on his own imprint WXYZ over the past 2 years, his standout music and quirky track titles have garnered support from well respected outlets including UKF. After hearing his Goldfat debut in October last year with ‘Mumbles of Grace’ we simply had to have some music from this exciting and inspiring young talent.
Opener ‘Lost In The Black Lodge’ delivers a suitably unsettling soundscape befitting the title from the word go. Featuring deftly constructed skippy drums and wide swathes of bass amidst wet rides and an eerily edged vocal sample, this track is a certified hurter promising to deliver the most unpleasant of facial expressions as soon as it’s received.
Title track ‘Mad Flavours’ leaves no taste bud unsated, gelling Duncan’s own lyrical wizardry with a meltingly soft instrumental. Pensive, reflective keys and rolling breaks are complemented by these measured, heartfelt and playful phrases which add a personal touch to a delightfully deep journey of an aural experience.
The eloquently dubbed ‘The Awesome Express’ is drenched in an almost indescribable sense of ambience and movement, boasting an innate rhythm from start to finish. Distant twangs of bass evoke warm feelings, with shuffling grooves and clicks promising to set your favourite dance ablaze with positive vibes in a post-COVID world. The progression present in this purely locomotive tune is palpable from top to bottom, with dreamy pads providing respite between two welcomingly different carriages that are equally cost effective as they are comforting.
Duncan’s pairing with Hospital bright spark and bearer of bars Degs, ‘Demagogues’ sees in the final flavour for the EP. Complete with cleverly twisted organ, keys, guitar and emotionally charged sonics aplenty, Andy’s vocal style sits together with a welcome naturality. Strikingly simple drums and wonderfully wobbly bass provide base for tightly laced lyrics from one of Horsham’s finest – of course complete with euphonious harmonies.
We’re delighted to offer an incredibly balanced meal that’s sure to offer flavour to savour for the coming months in the form of Winslow’s accomplished debut EP ‘Mad Flavours’ – out in all good stores from 9th April.
